Space X Launches Falcon 9 On First Test Flight
Washington (AFP) June 4, 2010
The privately-owned US firm SpaceX launched a rocket on its first test flight Friday, in what observers say is a milestone for the space industry and in the race to develop commercial carriers. The Falcon 9 rocket blasted off at 2:35 pm (1835 GMT) from Cape Canaveral in Florida, shortly after aborting a first attempt just a few seconds before the launch, due to an automatic computer override of the system. Alien Climates Play Key Role In Possibility Of Life
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jun 04, 2010
Greenhouse gases have a bad reputation because of the role they're playing in global warming on Earth today. However, scientists say we also owe our lives to greenhouse gases because they might have allowed life to take hold in the first place. A new study of how these and other climate conditions have affected the origin and evolution of life on Earth could provide clues to understanding ... more

Designing The Next Rover To Explore Mars
Raleigh NC (SPX) Jun 03, 2010
The concept of a wind-powered vehicle that can be used to explore the surface of Mars - a so-called "tumbleweed rover" that would roll over the surface of Mars like a tumbleweed - has been around for more than 10 years, but so far there has been no consensus on exactly what that vehicle should look like. Now researchers from North Carolina State University have developed a computer model t ... more

Key test for US private space efforts
Washington (AFP) June 3, 2010
The privately-owned SpaceX prepares for a first rocket flight on Friday, a key test in developing commercial launchers capable of servicing the orbiting International Space Station. President Barack Obama hopes the private sector will fill the gap in supplying the ISS between the time the Space Shuttle fleet is decommissioned later this year and the next generation of space vehicles comes into service.
