Indian Rockets To Soon Use Atmospheric Oxygen As Fuel
Bangalore, India (SPX) May 31, 2010
In an attempt to make its rockets lighter and carry heavier satellites, the Indian space agency is planning to flight test by the end of this year its own air-breathing engine that will use atmospheric oxygen as fuel. Air-breathing engines use atmospheric oxygen and burn it with the stored on-board fuel to generate the onward thrust. Conventional rockets carry both oxygen and chemical fuel on board. "We will be doing a series of ground tests of the air breathing engine soon. We are pla ... read more

Opportunity Recharging Between Drives
Pasadena CA (SPX) May 27, 2010
With the winter solstice just passed, Opportunity is constrained by power and must recharge between drives. The rover had an extended stay on the north facing site, referred to as a Lily Pad that it reached on Sol 2240 (May 13, 2010). The favorable northerly tilt provided an increase in power for extra remote science and a MarsQuake experiment. The MarsQuake experiment conducted on Sol 2242 (May 15, 2010), is designed to use the accelerometers in Opportunity's inertial measurement unit (IMU) as a ... read more
