US still has space ambitions: NASA chief
Washington (AFP) Feb 2, 2010
A US decision to scrap plans to return to the moon does not mean it is abandoning its space ambitions, NASA's chief told Congress Tuesday. "We must invest in fundamentally new innovations for space technology and new ways of doing business if we are to develop a space exploration and development program that is truly sustainable over the long term," NASA administrator Charles Bolden said at the National Press Club the day after President Barack Obama outlined new space priorities in the 2011 budget. ... read more

How To Live Long And Prosper In Space
Paris, France (ESA) Feb 02, 2010
Space is a hostile environment for living things, but small organisms on the Expose-E experiment unit outside Europe's Columbus ISS laboratory module have resisted the solar UV radiation, cosmic rays, vacuum and varying temperatures for 18 months. A certain lichen seems to be particularly happy in open space! Here on Earth, living organisms can be found almost everywhere, from the abysses ... more

Shuttle-Derived Vehicle: Shuttle-Derived Disaster
Honolulu - Apr 16, 2004
The space community finally seems to be coming to terms with the fact that the President's new space initiative requires the development of some kind of heavy-lift booster, one much more capable than the existing Delta 4H and Atlas 5H vehicles. But the question remains: what kind of booster? A popular answer is: a Shuttle-Derived Vehicle (SDV), similar to the Shuttle-C and Shuttle-Z proposals of years gone by. ... more

Obama cuts moon travel, links NASA to private firms
Washington (AFP) Feb 1, 2010
President Barack Obama Monday ditched US plans to return to the moon and hitched NASA's future to private industry in a budget calling for the space agency to stay close to Earth and do research. In budget proposals for NASA, Obama proposed increasing funding for the space agency to six billion dollars over five years. But he proposed dropping the massively over-budget program to develop ... more

Looking For Life In The Multiverse
Miami FL (SPX) Jan 18, 2010
Is there anybody out there? In Alejandro Jenkins' case, the question refers not to whether life exists elsewhere in the universe, but whether it exists in other universes outside of our own. While that might be a mind-blowing concept for the layperson to ponder, it's all in a day's work for Jenkins, a postdoctoral associate in theoretical high-energy physics at The Florida State University. In fact, his deep thoughts on the hypothetical "multiverse" - think of it as a mega-universe full ... read more
