Obama cuts moon travel, links NASA to private firms
Washington (AFP) Feb 1, 2010
President Barack Obama Monday ditched US plans to return to the moon and hitched NASA's future to private industry in a budget calling for the space agency to stay close to Earth and do research. In budget proposals for NASA, Obama proposed increasing funding for the space agency to six billion dollars over five years. But he proposed dropping the massively over-budget program to develop a new-generation rocket called Constellation, put in place by former president George Bush and ... read more

It's always amusing and sometimes frustrating to see NASA doing something I have suggested in these columns - usually after wasting millions of dollars and years of time on another option. Exactly that has happened with the boosters being designed as part of NASA's plan for manned missions to the Moon and Mars. Over two years ago I wrote about "Shuttle-derived" launch vehicles and concluded: "Any heavy-lift booster based on the failed technology of the Space Shuttle will certainly be too expensive and dangerous ... more

UCF Helping NASA Speed Shuttle Prep Times
Orlando FL (SPX) Feb 02, 2010
A University of Central Florida study aims to reduce the time it takes to prepare the space shuttle for a launch after an attempt has been scrubbed. United Space Alliance, NASA's prime space shuttle contractor, awarded UCF a contract to optimize the assembly steps necessary for the integration of the space shuttle to the launch structure. To accomplish that goal, the UCF team built replica ... more
