ISRO Reviews Cryogenic Engine
Thiruvananthapuram, India (PTI) Jan 08, 2010
The indigenously built highly sophisticated cryogenic engine is undergoing a final review by ISRO before it is cleared for use in the test launch of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-D3 later this year. "We are conducting a final thorough review of the cryogenic engine that will power the GSLV," Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman K Radhakrishnan told PTI on the sidelines ... read more

'Year 2010' smart-card bug turns Germans back to cash
Berlin (AFP) Jan 7, 2010
German shoppers hit by a "Year 2010" computer bug that bit 30 million bank cards fell back this week on a popular and proven means of payment -- cash. Ines Klem, 45, for instance, said she would withdraw "between 20 to 50 euros (30-70 dollars) on a regular basis to be sure to have no more problems." Klem had tried to buy food and found herself with a full basket and no way to pay for it ... more

Opportunity Examinines 'Marquette Island's' Interior
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jan 08, 2010
Opportunity has been investigating the rock known as "Marquette Island". The rock abrasion tool (RAT) was used to grind a 1.5 millimeters (0.06 inch) into this very hard rock for further investigation by the other rover instruments. On Sol 2110 (Dec. 24, 2009), the RAT itself was imaged to determine the amount of remaining grind bit. Then, a microscopic imager (MI) mosaic was performed on ... more

Most Earth-Like Exoplanet Started Out As A Gas Giant
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 07, 2010
The most Earth-like planet yet found around another star may be the rocky remains of a Saturn-size gas giant, according to research presented at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Washington, DC. "The first planets detected outside our solar system 15 years ago turned out to be enormous gas giants in very tight orbits around their stars. We call them 'hot Jupiters,' and they were ... more

Galactic GPS Possible With Pulsars And Gravity Waves
Rohnert Park CA (SPX) Jan 06, 2010
Radio astronomers have uncovered 17 millisecond pulsars in our galaxy by studying unknown high-energy sources detected by NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The astronomers made the discovery in less than three months. Such a jump in the pace of locating these hard-to-find objects holds the promise of using them as a kind of "galactic GPS" to detect gravitational waves passing near Earth. A pulsar is the rapidly spinning and highly magnetized core left behind when a massive star explodes. ... more

Earth-Like Planet Probably A Wasteland
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 06, 2010
When scientists confirmed in October that they had detected the first rocky planet outside our solar system, it advanced the longtime quest to find an Earth-like planet hospitable to life. Rocky planets - Earth, Mercury, Venus and Mars - make up half the planets in our solar system. Rocky planets are considered better environments to support life than planets that are mainly gaseous, like ... more

Just 15 Percent Of Solar Systems Like Ours
Washington DC (SPX) Jan 06, 2010
In their quest to find solar systems analogous to ours, astronomers have determined how common our solar system is. They've concluded that about 15 percent of stars in our galaxy host systems of planets like our own, with several gas giant planets in the outer part of the solar system. "Now we know our place in the universe," said Ohio State University astronomer Scott Gaudi. "Solar system ... more
