New Materials Designed To Deal With Hypersonic And Supersonic Hot Stuff
Brisbane, Australia (SPX) Dec 28, 2009
University of Queensland researchers are testing new materials to withstand the extreme heat experienced by hypersonic vehicles in flight so they can fly for substantially longer. Previous Australian experimental flight tests of scramjets, a type of very fast jet engine, have not lasted longer than five seconds. The tests, conducted at Woomera in South Australia over the past eight years, have used scramjet engines made of conventional materials which have problems with extreme heat including melting, and are not designed for re-use. ... read more

Space Debris A Concern In Satellite Launch
Zirakpur, India (SPX) Dec 23, 2009
Only 20% of the 12,000-odd artificial objects, including satellites, are operational in space, but unwanted "debris" are causing a lot of problem in launching new ones, former ISRO director Suresh Naik said. There are around 12,000 satellites and other artificial objects in the space, out of which only 20% are active. Satellites have a life of 15-20 years, and then they get lost in space ... more

Milt Thompson's Wild Ride
Edwards AFB CA (SPX) Dec 23, 2009
Ominous black smoke rose over California's high desert on a crisp, cold December morning in 1962, and there was no sign of a parachute. Della Mae Bowling, the pilot's office secretary at NASA's Flight Research Center on Edwards Air Force Base, was crying as fire trucks raced across the vast expanse of Rogers Dry Lake toward the crash scene. But Bowling and others were to learn that what ... more
