NASA counts down to rocket test
Washington (AFP) Oct 27, 2009
The US space agency began the countdown Tuesday for the test launch of a rocket designed to replace the aging space shuttle fleet and one day take astronauts to the Moon and Mars. Barring bad weather, a four-hour window will begin at 8:00 am (1200 GMT) for the launch of the Ares I-X rocket from Florida's Kennedy Space Center, a key test for the future of US space exploration amid deep uncert ... read more

Better Electric Propulsion May Boost Satellite Lifetimes
Atlanta GA (SPX) Oct 27, 2009
Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have won a $6.5 million grant to develop improved components that will boost the efficiency of electric propulsion systems that are used to control the positions of satellites and planetary probes. Focusing on improved cathodes for devices known as Hall effect thrusters, the research would reduce propellant consumption in commercial ... more

Spirit's Antenna Back To Normal Use
Pasadena CA (SPX) Oct 27, 2009
Spirit has recovered from X-band fault and is using her steerable high-gain antenna (HGA) normally. The clearing of the X-band fault was to occur on Sol 2056 (Oct. 15, 2009), but a Deep Space Network (DSN) station outage at the last minute prevented the commands from reaching the rover. On Sol 2058 (Oct. 17, 2009), the commands were successfully sent to the rover that cleared the X-band ... more

Super Heavy EEVLs As Replacement Of ARES 1 And ARES 5
Prague, Czech Republic (SPX) Oct 27, 2009
I think that the US Space Program needs very much to liberate itself from the heritage of the STS, first of all from SRB and from huge LOX/LH2 tanks. Dry mass of such tank of ARES 5, including 6 engines RS 68, amounts at least 65.000 kg and such dead mass will receive almost orbital velocity which constitutes a big loss of the fuel. The Augustine Commission has outlined the most effective ... more

NASA Mission To Study Moon's Fragile Atmosphere
Huntsville AL (SPX) Oct 26, 2009
Right now, the Moon is a ghost town. Nothing stirs. Here and there, an abandoned Apollo rover - or the dusty base of a lunar lander - linger as silent testimony to past human activity. But these days, only occasional asteroid impacts disrupt the decades-long spell of profound stillness. And this stillness presents scientists with an important opportunity. Currently, the Moon's ... more

A Long Night Falls Over Saturn's Rings
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Oct 26, 2009
As Saturn's rings orbit the planet, a section is typically in the planet's shadow, experiencing a brief night lasting from 6 to 14 hours. However, once approximately every 15 years, night falls over the entire visible ring system for about four days. This happens during Saturn's equinox, when the sun is directly over Saturn's equator. At this time, the rings, which also orbit directly over ... more

NASA is 'go' for crucial rocket test
    Washington (AFP) Oct 25, 2009
NASA is set to blast off a prototype rocket on Tuesday that carries hopes of returning humans to the Moon, and for the first time to Mars, despite deep uncertainty about the program's future. The space agency said everything is in order for Tuesday's two-minute, 30-second test of the Ares I-X rocket, a first look at the launch vehicle designed to replace NASA's aging space shuttle fleet. ... more
