New Maps Of Polar Caps Will Refine Martian Climate Models
Tucson AZ (SPX) Sep 17, 2009
Scientists from the Tucson-based Planetary Science Institute have created the first detailed maps that show the amount of dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) deposited in the polar regions of Mars. The maps reveal how the ice thickness varies with the seasons. The maps were created from measurements taken by the Mars Odyssey neutron spectrometer, said PSI Senior Scientist Thomas H. Prettyman ... read more

UH Manoa Team Unravels The Chemistry Of Titan's Hazy Atmosphere
Manoa HI (SPX) Sep 17, 2009
A team of University of Hawai'i at Manoa researchers led by Ralf Kaiser, physical chemist at UH Manoa, unraveled the chemical evolution of the orange-brownish colored atmosphere of Saturn's moon Titan, the only solar system body besides Venus and Earth with a solid surface and thick atmosphere. The UH Manoa team, including Xibin Gu and Seol Kim, conducted simulation experiments mimicking ... more

Armadillo Aerospace Makes Successful Flights To Qualify For NASA Prize
Washington DC (SPX) Sep 17, 2009
Armadillo Aerospace this past week successfully flew its Scorpius vehicle twice in two hours between a pair of landing pads to qualify for the $1 million top prize in NASA's Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge. The milestone event paves the way for higher-altitude flights by the Armadillo Aerospace team, and demonstrated the value of prizes to stimulate innovation. Other entrants ... more

Russia delays Mars probe launch until 2011: report
    Moscow (AFP) Sept 16, 2009
Russia will pushed back its flagship satellite mission to Mars' moon until 2011 in a move which will delay the joint launch of China's first Mars probe, space sources were cited as saying Wednesday. "The prospects of the spacecraft Phobos' flight to Mars was discussed at a conference of scientist and space industry firms today. The dominant opinion was that this flight would be put off until ... more

Large planet found outside solar system
Barcelona, Spain (UPI) Sep 16, 2009
A rocky planet, five times larger than Earth, has been found outside the solar system, researchers reported Wednesday at a meeting in Spain. Astronomer Artie Hatzes told CNN the planet has a composition that is similar to Earth but is much hotter because it is so close to the star it orbits. Project leader Didier Queloz of Geneva Observatory in Switzerland said "the place may we ... more

Upcoming Mercury Encounter Presents New Opportunities For Magnetometer
Laurel MD (SPX) Sep 15, 2009
On September 29, the MESSENGER spacecraft will pass by Mercury for the third time, flying 141.7 miles above the planet's rocky surface for a final gravity assist that will enable it to enter orbit about Mercury in 2011. This encounter will also provide new observational opportunities for MESSENGER's Magnetometer, designed to determine the structure and origin of Mercury's intrinsic magnetic ... more

    Water Quality In Orbit
Salt Lake City UT (SPX) Sep 14, 2009
Space is not a fun place to get a stomach bug. To ensure drinking water is adequately disinfected, University of Utah chemists developed a two-minute water quality monitoring method that just started six months of tests aboard the International Space Station. "Now they bring water back on the space shuttle and analyze it on the ground. The problem is there is a big delay. You'd like to ... more
