Missing An Opportunity To Build A Long-Lasting Solar System Exploration Architecture
Bethesda MD (SPX) Aug 21, 2009
Recently, Aviation Week and Space News both published reports speculating on several options the Augustine Panel may recommend as the blueprint for NASA's future human space flight program. If these are indeed the true options the Panel will present to the Obama Administration later this month, the U.S. will lose the opportunity to create a truly advantageous solar system exploration ... read more

Software caused postponement of first SKorean rocket launch
    Seoul (AFP) Aug 20, 2009
Officials Thursday blamed a computer software problem for the postponement of South Korea's first space rocket launch just minutes before the eagerly-awaited blast-off. They defended the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-1 programme amid public frustration at the latest in a series of delays in the project. Seoul has invested 502.5 billion won (419 million dollars) and much national pride in ... more

Spirit Could Yet Rove For Many More Sols
Pasadena CA (JPL) Aug 21, 2009
Spirit has passed 2,000 sols on the surface of Mars, yet another milestone. Starting its third sol millennia, Spirit continues to profile the geology at the location where the rover is embedded, a site called "Troy" on the west side of "Home Plate." On Sol 1995 (Aug. 13, 2009), Spirit continued the campaign of grinding deeper into surface targets, then collecting in situ (contact) ... more

Research Reveals Major Insight Into Evolution Of Life On Earth
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Aug 21, 2009
Humans might not be walking on Earth today if not for the ancient fusing of two microscopic, single-celled organisms called prokaryotes, NASA-funded research has found. By comparing proteins present in more than 3000 different prokaryotes - a type of single-celled organism without a nucleus - molecular biologist James A. Lake from the University of California at Los Angeles' Center for ... more

Space shuttle Discovery cleared for lift-off
    Washington (AFP) Aug 19, 2009
The space shuttle Discovery will blast off next Tuesday on a mission to the International Space Station, NASA said, clearing the launch after days of debate over safety issues. Lift-off was set for 0536 GMT from the Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral in Florida, NASA said, after two days of meetings between mission officials. "It was a very effective review. I think we're ready to ... more

SKorea delays rocket launch minutes before blast-off
    Seoul (AFP) Aug 19, 2009
South Korea Wednesday postponed the launch of its first space rocket just eight minutes before the scheduled blast-off, due to a technical fault. Mission controllers suspended the launch at 4:52 pm (0752 GMT) and began dumping the rocket's fuel, the science ministry said. It was the seventh time since 2002 that the project, operated in partnership with Russia, has been delayed. The Korea ... more

    Microsats For The Moon
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Aug 20, 2009
For decades, microsatellites have been a boon to spaceflight. A small satellite can be built and launched fairly cheaply, sometimes hitching a ride for free aboard a large satellite launch. So far, microsatellites have not ventured very far into space. Could one go all the way to the Moon? Amateur groups have speculated on this possibility for years, but none have actually built a bird and ... more
