Shuttle Endeavour Astronauts Eye Friday Landing
Houston, Texas (AFP) July 31, 2009
The multinational crew of the space shuttle Endeavour prepared to return to Earth on Friday, following a marathon mission to the International Space Station. There was only a slight chance that rain showers near NASA's Kennedy Space Center runway in Florida might force the seven-member crew to spend an extra day in orbit, according to forecasters. Study Puts New Spin On Rotation Speed Of Saturn
Louisville KY (SPX) Jul 31, 2009
Saturn is rotating five minutes faster than previously thought, a fact that sheds new light on the planet's composition. Wave patterns in Saturn's clouds show that scientists have been using the wrong rotation rate for the planet, says Timothy Dowling, a planetary atmospheres researcher at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky., who helped make the discovery. An article on the ... more

Saturn's 'day' shorter by five minutes
    Paris (AFP) July 29, 2009
A day on Saturn is pretty short, and it just got shorter. The time it takes the beringed behemoth to complete a spin on its axis has just been calculated by astrophysicists at 10 hours, 34 minutes and 13 seconds, more than five minutes shorter than previous estimates. A planet comprising clouds of gas driven by layers of mighty jetstreams, Saturn has no lasting visual landmarks as a rock ... more
