Sea Launch successfully lofted another satellite into orbit today -- the Eutelsat 3B satellite via a Zenit 3SL rocket. It's the 36th rocket-satellite combo launched by the non-governmental space company since it was founded in 1995. As usual, the rocket blasted-off from the company's Odyssey Launch Platform, currently situated off the coast of Souther California at 154 degrees west longitude. The platform left the port of Los Angeles yesterday. Sea Launch is a consortium of companies from Norway, Russia, Ukraine and the United States. Managed by Boeing, the company launches communications satellites for a number of entities, including EchoStar, DirecTV, XM Satellite Radio, PanAmSat and Thuraya. The new satellite will help Eutelsat provide coverage for customers across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Brazil. "I am very pleased to once again announce the successful launch for our valued Eutelsat customer, our third in a row for them," said Sergey Gugkaev, CEO of Sea Launch. "The satellite will enable Eutelsat to diversify its commercial response to Internet Service Providers, telcos, government agencies and broadcasters operating in Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia," the company said in a press release.
