Martian dust devil analogues in the Mojave Desert #ASA183
Nashville TN (SPX) Dec 08, 2022
In the Mojave Desert, the sun beats down on the ground and makes pockets of low pressure. Cool air rushes into these areas, where it warms and rises, creating vortices that pick up dust. These types of dust devils aren't limited to Earth: They are found on Mars at sizes reaching 1,600 meters in diameter. Dust devils could play a large role in the Martian climate, and they are crucial to un ... more

New system designs nanomaterials that conduct heat in specific ways
Boston MA (SPX) Oct 10, 2022
Computer chips are packed with billions of microscopic transistors that enable powerful computation, but also generate a great deal of heat. A buildup of heat can slow a computer processor and make it less efficient and reliable. Engineers employ heat sinks to keep chips cool, sometimes along with fans or liquid cooling systems; however, these methods often require a lot of energy to operate. ... more

Without more data, a black hole's origins can be "spun" in any direction
Boston MA (SPX) Dec 09, 2022
Clues to a black hole's origins can be found in the way it spins. This is especially true for binaries, in which two black holes circle close together before merging. The spin and tilt of the respective black holes just before they merge can reveal whether the invisible giants arose from a quiet galactic disk or a more dynamic cluster of stars.
