Scots Engineers Prove Space Pioneer's 25-Year-Old Theory
Glasgow, UK (SPX) Jul 27, 2010
When American space pioneer, Dr Robert L Forward, proposed in 1984 a way of greatly improving satellite telecommunications using a new family of orbits, some claimed it was impossible. But now engineers at the University of Strathclyde's Advanced Space Concepts Laboratory have proved that Forward was right. The late Dr Forward - a renowned physicist who worked in the United States and from his second home in Scotland - believed it was possible to use 'displaced orbits' to deploy more satel ... read more

Caltech Team Finds Evidence Of Water In Moon Minerals
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
That dry, dusty moon overhead? Seems it isn't quite as dry as it's long been thought to be. Although you won't find oceans, lakes, or even a shallow puddle on its surface, a team of geologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), working with colleagues at the University of Tennessee, has found structurally bound hydroxyl groups (i.e., water) in a mineral in a lunar rock returned ... more

Finding Frugal Aliens
Mountain View CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
For 50 years, humans have scanned the skies with radio telescopes for distant electronic signals indicating the existence of intelligent alien life. The search - centered at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. - has tapped into our collective fascination with the concept that we may not be alone in the universe. But the effort has so far proved fruitless, and the scientific communi ... more

WISE Discovers Over 90 Near-Earth Objects
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jul 23, 2010
NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, completed its first survey of the entire sky on July 17, 2010. The mission has generated more than one million images so far, of everything from asteroids to distant galaxies. So far, WISE has observed more than 100,000 asteroids, both known and previously unseen. Most of these space rocks are in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. However, some are near-Earth objects, asteroids and comets with orbits that pass relatively close to Earth. WIS ... read more
