![]() Sriharikota (PTI) Jul 13, 2010 The Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) workhorse, Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C15), did it again on Monday with a spectacular multiple-satellite launch that came as a big morale-booster for ISRO scientists, since GSLV-D3's failure last April. Blasting off into a clear morning sky at 9:22 am as scheduled, spewing yellowish plumes from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, the 44.4 m tall 230 tonnes weighing PSLV-C15 injected five satellites into the planned orbit some 17.14 minutes afte ... read more |

Recipes For Renegade Planets![]() Over the past two hundred years, a standard model emerged to explain how solar systems form. Using our own solar system as a guide, the model explains the existence of a central star (our Sun), an inner system of rocky, "terrestrial" planets, and an outer system of "gas giant" planets, all orbiting in nearly the same plane of rotation as the central star. Recent discoveries of planetary sy ... more Apollo 16: Footsteps Under High Sun ![]() The lunar module Orion landed in the Descartes Highlands of the moon on April 21, 1972. The Apollo 16 mission targeted a highland region. Originally thought to be a volcanic site, the samples returned by Apollo 16 actually indicated that the highlands of the moon primarily consist of impact-formed rocks (breccias), a substantial scientific result. The featured image is an LROC NAC image of ... more Saturn Propellers Reflect Solar System Origins ![]() Scientists using NASA's Cassini spacecraft at Saturn have stalked a new class of moons in the rings of Saturn that create distinctive propeller-shaped gaps in ring material. It marks the first time scientists have been able to track the orbits of individual objects in a debris disk. The research gives scientists an opportunity to time-travel back into the history of our solar system to rev ... more |

![]() Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 09, 2010 Spirit remains silent at her location called "Troy" on the west side of Home Plate. No communication has been received from the rover since Sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). As stated previously, it is likely that Spirit has experienced a low-power fault and has turned off all sub-systems, including communication and gone into a deep sleep. While sleeping, the rover will use the available solar array energy to recharge her batteries. When the batteries recover to a sufficient state of charge, Spiri ... read more |
