Voyager 2 At 12,000 Days
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 29, 2010
NASA's plucky Voyager 2 spacecraft has hit a long-haul operations milestone - operating continuously for 12,000 days. For nearly 33 years, the venerable spacecraft has been returning data about the giant outer planets, and the characteristics and interaction of solar wind between and beyond the planets. Among its many findings, Voyager 2 discovered Neptune's Great Dark Spot and its 450-meter-per-second (1,000-mph) winds. Study indicates life was possible all over Mars
Paris (AFP) June 25, 2010
Conditions suitable for life - most notably the presence of water - may once have existed all over Mars, the European Space Agency (ESA) said Friday. Hydrated silicate minerals were found by the ESA's Mars Express and NASA's Mars Reconnaissance orbiters in northern lowlands of the Red Planet, a clear indication that water once flowed there, ESA said in a statement ahead of the publication ... more

Machines that understand us on the rise
New York (UPI) Jun 25, 2010
Devices that can understand people, using a technology known as speech recognition, are becoming a common feature of everyday life, researchers say. From people telling their cellphones to dial a number to doctors using speech recognition software to record and transcribe patient visits, speech recognition is making inroads into all areas of human activity, The New York Times reported Friday. Call centers use voice software technology, often to the point where an entire session is automa ... read more
