Newly Discovered Planet Could Hold Water
Paris, France (ESA) Mar 19, 2010
The Corot satellite strikes again with another fascinating planet discovery. This time, the newly discovered gas giant planet may have an interior that closely resembles those of Jupiter and Saturn in our own Solar System. Very few planets are temperate enough to allow the presence of liquid water, but the newly discovered Corot-9b is one of them. It was found on 16 May 2008 and orbits its star every 95.274 days, a little longer than Mercury takes to go round the Sun. More than 400 exoplanet ... read more

Bangalore, India (AFP) March 16, 2010
Paramilitary police guarding a space centre in southern India on Tuesday exchanged fire with two men who were acting suspiciously near the facility, an official said. The shootout occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at the Deep Space Network in Byalalu, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Bangalore, when the guards challenged two men, one of whom began firing a handgun. 'Cool Jupiter' widens search for exoplanets
Paris (AFP) March 17, 2010
Marking a further step in the hunt for worlds orbiting other stars, astronomers on Wednesday said they had found a cool planet the size of Jupiter that encircles a sun at searing proximity. The work is a technical exploit in the field of exoplanets, as planets outside our Solar System are called, they said. "This is the first (exoplanet) whose properties we can study in depth," said Clai ... more

Interrogating The Asteroid
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Mar 17, 2010
Meet asteroid 1999 RQ36, a chunk of rock and dust about 1,900 feet in diameter that could tell us how the solar system was born, and perhaps, shed light on how life began. It also might hit us someday. "This asteroid is a time capsule from before the birth of our solar system," said Bill Cutlip of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., one of the leaders of Goddard's effort to propose a mission called OSIRIS-REx that will return a sample from RQ36. If selected, Goddard will pr ... read more
