Ariane 5 launch of Thai, Mexican satellites delayed

The launch of an Ariane 5 rocket set to hoist Thai and Mexican telecommunication satellites into space Friday has been delayed by 24 hours, Arianespace said Wednesday.

The 171 Ariane rocket launch from the European Space Station in Kourou, French Guiana will be postponed long enough to make "technical verifications," said the company, the sales arm of the European rocket consortium.

The nature of the technical verifications were to be specified later in the day.

The Ariane 5 ECA rocket, a heavy-duty version of the European Space Agency's (ESA) workhorse Ariane 5 series, can carry a payload of up to 10 tonnes. If successful, this will be the second Arianespace launch this year.
