Shuttle Launch Postponed Due To ET Delays And Solar Energy Shortage Cape Canaveral (AFP) Feb 20, 2007
Shuttle Discovery's mission to ship part of the Japanese laboratory Kibo up to the International Space Station will be delayed one month to May 25, NASA said Wednesday. The mission was put off by a delay in the delivery of Discovery's external fuel tank (pictured) and an unfavorable angle between the sun and the ISS for solar power generation between May 7 and May 25, which may have affected the mission in its originally planned period. ... read more |

US space shuttle Atlantis returns home
Cape Canaveral, Florida (AFP) Feb 20, 2008The shuttle Atlantis safely landed in Florida Wednesday, completing a successful mission to install Europe's first space laboratory. Atlantis touched down at the seaside Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, bringing home seven astronauts following a 13-day mission to deliver the Columbus lab to the orbiting International Space Station. The shuttle's return also cleared the skies for ... more Who's Orbiting The Moon
Washington DC (SPX) Feb 21, 2008The space around Earth is a busy place, as teeming with traffic as a roundabout. More than 500 active satellites are bustling about up there right now. Some are transmitting radio, television, and telephone signals; others are gathering information about Earth's atmosphere and weather; still others are helping people navigate down here; and the rest are conducting space research. Soon the ... more NASA Partners With Orbital Sciences For Space Transport Services
Washington DC (SPX) Feb 21, 2008NASA selected Orbital Sciences Corporation of Dulles, Va., to develop and demonstrate commercial orbital transportation services that could open new markets and pave the way for contracts to launch and deliver crew and cargo to the International Space Station. NASA and Orbital Sciences signed a funded Space Act Agreement under the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services Project, known a ... more Arianespace Mission Update: The ATV Has Been Integrated On Its Ariane 5 Launcher
Kourou, French Guiana (SPX) Feb 21, 2008Ariane 5's largest payload ever has been integrated on the launch vehicle, taking Arianespace's upcoming historic mission with the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) one step closer to its March 8 liftoff. The integration process at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana began late last week, and was concluded with the spacecraft's power-up this weekend atop the launcher. The European-built ... more Mars study shows oceans of water bubbled up from below
Paris (AFP) Feb 20, 2008Fan-shaped deltas at the edge of huge basins scattered across Mars were probably formed by a titanic influx of water, gushing from the bowels of the Red Planet, according to study released Wednesday. The origin and morphology of the deltas, studded with curious step-like terraces, have perplexed scientists since they were first observed three years ago. Today the surface of Mars is bone dry ... more |

Tehran (AFP) Feb 19, 2008Iran said on Tuesday a probe it sent into space on the back of rocket had reached an altitude of 200 kilometres (125 miles) and returned to earth after minutes, the student news agency ISNA reported. Kavoshgar (Explorer) was launched earlier this month on what Iran touted as its first rocket to be sent into space on a mission to prepare for the launch of its first home-produced satellite ... more STS-122 Prepares For Landing
Cape Canaveral FL (SPX) Feb 20, 2008The crew of space shuttle Atlantis is spending today getting ready for their return home and the end of the STS-122 mission. As part of the preparations, the astronauts performed a test earlier today of the steering jets - or thrusters - that will be used to position the orbiter for re-entry. They did not test the four aft orbiter maneuvering system vernier thrusters. These share a common ... more NASA MidSTAR-1 Successful Technologies May Be Revolutionary
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Feb 20, 2008Two new technologies launched onboard a U.S. Naval Academy satellite called MidSTAR-1 have proven successful in their tests in space. One technology is a sensor that can check for harmful chemicals and the other is a special "film" that can control heat. These technologies were collaboratively developed between NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.; NASA's Ames Research Center ... more China set to launch record number of spacecraft in 2008: report
Beijing (AFP) Feb 19, 2008China will launch a record number of spacecraft this year, state media reported Tuesday, amid a rise in tensions among world powers over the militarisation of space. China plans to send up more than 10 missions this year, said Yang Baohua, head of the China Academy of Space Technology, according to the China Daily. Boston, Massachusetts (AFP) Feb 17, 2008Planets resembling Earth can be found orbiting many sun-like stars in our galaxy, increasing the prospects of finding extraterrestial life on some of them, according to a study released Sunday. University of Arizona astronomer Michael Meyer, working with NASA's Spitzer space telescope, said his research shows that between 20 percent and 60 percent of stars similar to our sun have conditions ... more Space Shuttle Endeavour Arrives At Launch Pad
Cape Canaveral FL (SPX) Feb 19, 2008After safely reaching its launch pad Monday at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the space shuttle Endeavour now awaits its next major milestone for the upcoming STS-123 mission. A full launch dress rehearsal, known as the terminal countdown demonstration test, is scheduled to take place at Kennedy from Feb. 23 to 25. The shuttle arrived at the pad at approximately 4:45 a.m. EST Monday on top ... more Amino Acid Ingredients Found In Distant Galaxy
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Feb 19, 2008Using the giant dish at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, radio astronomers have discovered evidence of hydrogen cyanide and methanimine, two carbon compounds that can combine with water to make the amino acid glycine. Because proteins are composed of amino acids, the new results make distant space seem a bit more hospitable to life. Except that life is highly unlikely to exist in the tempestuous ... more Time flies in space, astronauts on shuttle mission say
Paris (AFP) Feb 16, 2008Astronauts helping install a European laboratory at the International Space Station said Saturday time flies out there when the work is satisfying, though weightlessness takes some getting used to. The seven crew members of the shuttle Atlantis and their three colleagues on the ISS spoke to journalists through a live link up from space. US space shuttle Atlantis has been docked to the ISS ... more
